by on May 9, 2011

Are you a beginner to the mobile DJ profession? Maybe this is something you’ve been considering, but are not really sure how to go about getting started. In this article, we will cover a basic equipment list for the beginner mobile DJ. We’ll cover everything from turntables and mics to mixers such as the Alesis Multimix 8 USB, which is quite popular among DJs and musicians.

One of the first items that any DJ will need is some type of turntable. Turntables come in basically two different types. You can choose from either direct drive or belt drive, with direct drive being considered the best and also a bit more pricey to reflect its superiority. You will also want to be aware of the pitch adjustment of the turntable. You can change the tempo of a track by changing the speed of the platter and the more you are able to adjust for this, the better.

Choose a turntable that has plenty of torque. This is the strength of the drive and it will enable you to make exact changes to the various mixes to get exactly the sound and style that you are trying to achieve. The final thing to consider when purchasing your turntable would be the type of tone arm that it includes. Typically, straight arms are said to be better for scratching, so this may be something that you want to consider.

Your next major piece of equipment should be the Alesis Multimix 12R, or a comparable mixer of some sort. A common mixer used by DJs would typically include at least 2 and up to 6 or more stereo channels to be used for mixing and connecting the various audio systems that the DJ is utilizing. Each of the various channels would have a phono input for turntables as well as 1-2 line inputs for other equipment such as music players. Each channel also has its own controls and they are quite easy to operate.

Another key item for the DJ set-up would be a good quality pair of headphones. In general, headphones that have an ear design that is closed will do better because you will not have as much outside noise interference which will allow you to get a better mix. You will probably also want to go for something that is relatively lightweight, because it is much more comfortable when you will have them on for long periods of time.

There are a few other basic items to research and consider as well. You should buy a good quality microphone and as your business grows, you may want to consider investing in some type of special DJ software.

Once you’ve chosen your turntable, purchased your Alesis 12R or another brand of mixer and good quality headphones, you will be well on your way to becoming the ultimate DJ. The rest is going to be up to proving your skills, getting lots of great references and building the best DJ business that you possibly can.

We wish you the best of luck!
